Baraga County, Michigan Overview

Baraga County is located in the far north of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and consists of a total of 1,069 square miles. The vast majority of this is comprised of land at approximately 898 square miles, with only around 16% of the land taken up with water. On the shore of Lake Superior, this county also includes a large section of the Huron Mountains and Mount Arvon, which is the highest natural point in Michigan (at 1,979 feet). As of the 2013 census there were approximately 8,695 people in the county and 7 zip codes in the area: 49908, 49919, 49946, 49861, 49958, 49962 and 49970.

Within the County Clerk’s office you can find birth, death and marriage records, assumed names, notary bond filing, voter registration, concealed weapon permits, military discharge filings, assumed names, genealogy, naturalization and personal protection orders. Much of the information here is considered public record and you can request it in person from the office, during normal business hours. There is no way to purchase or view public documents online.
All recorded documents that are related to property in the county are located in the Register of Deeds office. These include deeds, mortgages, land corners, plats and surveys and are considered public record. Anyone can visit the Register of Deeds in person to request documents; however there are no records available online to view or request.

The Equalization Department takes the place of an Assessment Office, providing all documents and assessments related to property. This department develops and maintains all property descriptions as well as listing and valuing properties for taxes, developing and using standards for assessment, filing state reports and calculating millage reductions.

Baraga County Marriage License Office
In order to obtain a marriage license in Baraga County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
