Hampshire County, Massachusetts

Hampshire County is a non-governmental county located in the state of Massachusetts. It was constituted in 1662 from previously unorganized territory comprising the entire western part of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The county was named after Hampshire in England. Its most populous municipality is Amherst, and its county seat is Northampton. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 158,080 people and a total area of 545 square miles; of which 18 square miles is water 527 square miles is land.  Hampshire County borders the following counties: Franklin County to the north, Worcester County to the east, Hampden County to the south and Berkshire County to the west.

The Hampshire District Registry of Deeds is the official recorder of public records in the county. In addition, the registry of deeds is in charge of elections in the county. Some of the records maintained by the registry of deeds include but are not limited to assignments of mortgage, liens, judgments, modifications, deeds, mortgages, releases/satisfactions, lis pendens, UCCs and plats.

Documents/instruments maintained by the Registry of Deeds are open to the public and can be accessed by doing a background check online, by fax, or by visiting the Registry of Deeds’ office in person during office hours. To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the Hampshire District Registry of Deeds Website. When requesting public records by fax, you will be required to present a completed Records Request Fax Form. Forms should be faxed to the records center (617-288-4505) between 9 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday. On the form, list each file by name and its State Records Center box code. Some of the records that can be obtained by fax include property records (1948–Present), old images prior to 1948, and proprietor records from 1653. In case the records you requested cannot me faxed to you, you will be required to visit the Registry of Deeds’ office in person at 33 King Street, Northampton MA 01060 to obtain the records.

The Registry of Vital Records and Statistics handles documents related to birth and death certificates as well as marriage and divorce records. These documents are generally considered private and can only be requested by the individuals that they are written about however some of them can also be requested by others for genealogical purchases. These documents are available entirely online but can also be requested, in person, during normal business hours.

The Registry of Deeds is responsible for all property related documents, which include mortgages, deeds, liens and leases on all real and personal property within the county. These documents are generally considered public record and can therefore be requested and purchased by anyone who wants them. Some of these land records are available directly through the online system, however some of them must still be requested directly from the office.

Hampshire County Court Information

The court system and all of its records are generally considered public record as soon as information has been completely filed. Court cases are nearly always considered public record and available for public viewing once the case has been completed and everything is sorted and recorded. At that time, it can be requested by anyone. These documents are not available online, however they can be requested directly, in person, from the court system.
