Barnstable County, Massachusetts

Barnstable County is located in the state of Massachusetts. The county was formed in 1685 and consists of Cape Cod and associated islands. Barnstable is the largest city in the county and also the county seat.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 215,888 people and a total area of 1,306 square miles, of which 912 square miles is water and 394 square miles is land, making it second-largest county in Massachusetts by total area. Barnstable County borders Plymouth County to the northwest; off Barnstable County’s southern shore are Nantucket County and Dukes County.

The Barnstable County Registry of Deeds contains over three centuries’ records of real property ownership history for the county. The County Clerk is responsible for birth and death records, DBA’s and dissolutions, divorce packets, genealogy, marriage records, license applications, concealed weapons licenses and notary public information. These documents are considered private and are therefore not available for general use by the public. These records can only be requested by those that they are actually written about and are not available online. They are available via in person request but are not available online.

Records from the Register of Deeds are property records including mortgages, deeds, liens and other land documents. These documents are considered public records and relate to both real and personal property within the county.
