Washington County, Maryland

Washington County is located in the western part of the state of Maryland. It was formed in September 6, 1776; the county is one of three Maryland counties recognized by the Appalachian Regional Commission as being part of Appalachia. Washington County was the first county in the United States to be named for the Revolutionary War general (and later President) George Washington. Hagerstown is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 147,430 people and a total area of 467 square miles, of which 9.6 square miles is water and 458 square miles is land. Washington County borders the following counties: Fulton County, Pennsylvania, to the northwest; Allegany County to the west; Morgan County, West Virginia, to the southwest; Berkeley County, West Virginia, to the south; Jefferson County, West Virginia, to the south; Loudoun County, Virginia, to the southeast; Frederick County to the east; and Franklin County, Pennsylvania, to the northeast.

The Washington County Clerk of the Circuit Court is charged with the responsibility of maintaining all public records in the county. In addition to maintaining public records, the clerk also marriage licenses, keeps business records, and performs civil marriage ceremonies. The office of the clerk maintains the following records: mortgages, deeds, powers of attorney, corporations, wills and name changes, assignments and releases, liens, and fixture filing/UCC filings.
