Wicomico County, Maryland

Wicomico County is located in the southeastern part of the state of Maryland. The county was formed in 1867 from parts of Somerset and Worcester counties. Wicomico County was named after the Wicomico River, which in turn derives from Algonquian language words “wicko mekee”, meaning “a place where houses are built”. Salisbury is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 98,733 and a total area of 400 square miles, of which 26 square miles is water and 374 square miles is land. Wicomico County borders the following counties: Dorchester County to the northwest; Somerset County to the southwest; Sussex County, Delaware, to the north; and Worcester County to the southeast.
