Prince George’s County is located in the state of Maryland. The county was formed in October 3, 1695, and named after Prince George of Denmark, the brother of King Christian V of Denmark and Norway, and the husband of Anne, Queen of Great Britain. Bowie is the largest city in the county, while Upper Marlboro is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 863,420 people, making it the second-most populous county in Maryland. It has a total area of 499 square miles, of which 16 square miles is water and 483 square miles is land. Prince George’s County borders the following: Anne Arundel County to the east; Calvert County to the southeast; Charles County to the south; Howard County to the north; Montgomery County to the northwest; Fairfax County, Virginia, to the southwest; Alexandria, Virginia, to the southwest; and Washington, D.C. to the west.

The Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court is a public institution rich in history of Prince George’s County. The Clerk of the Court, elected by the citizens of the county, is a state official who occupies an integral position within the judicial branch of government. Duties of the clerk include:

The Court Clerk is responsible for marriage and divorce records, military discharges and birth and death records. He is also responsible for mortgages, conveyances, plats and land deeds. Mortgages and other property related documents are considered public record and can then be requested by anyone at any time. Private records, including marriage and divorce records, can only be requested by those that are listed on them.

The Assessment Office is responsible for taxable valuations related to personal and real property within the county.

Any requests for tax related information from the county can be made directly with the Assessment Office. These documents include GIS maps, property searches and listings, revenue commissions, tax equalizations and survey information. All of this information is considered public record and requests can be made by anyone to the online portal or in person.
