Howard County, Maryland

Howard County is located in the central part of the state of Maryland. The county was formed on May 13, 1838, and named after Colonel John Eager Howard, an officer in the “Maryland Line” of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 287,085 people and a  total area of 253 square miles, of which 2.7 square miles  is water and 251 square miles is land, making it the second-smallest county in Maryland by land area and smallest by total area. Howard County borders the following counties: Anne Arundel County to the southeast, Baltimore County to the northeast, Carroll County to the north, Frederick County to the northwest, Montgomery County to the southwest, and Prince George’s County to the south.

The Howard County Clerk of the Circuit Court is charged with the responsibility of filing, processing, and maintaining all public records in the county as per the law. Some of the records maintained by the clerk’s office include but are not limited to deeds, mortgages and deeds of trust, condominium, leases, subdivision plats, releases of mortgages and deeds of trust, marriage records, land contracts, financing statements, military discharges, and federal liens.

These documents are not available for public purchase, however they can be requested by the people that they are about. Public records in this office include mortgages, deeds, conveyances and plats. These documents are not available online, however they can be requested directly from the office at any time.
