Frederick County, Maryland

Frederick County is located in the northern part of the state of Maryland. The count was created on June 10, 1748, from parts of Prince George’s County and Baltimore County, and is believed to be named after Frederick, Prince of Wales, or Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron Baltimore. The county seat is also named Frederick. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 240,336 people and a total area of 667 square miles, of which 7.2 square miles is water and 660 square miles is land, making it the largest county in Maryland in terms of land area. Frederick County borders the following counties: Adams County, Pennsylvania, to the north; Carroll County to the east; Howard County to the southeast; Franklin County, Pennsylvania, to the northwest; Montgomery County to the south; Washington County to the west; and Loudoun County, Virginia, to the southwest.

The Frederick County Clerk of the Circuit Court is charged with the responsibility of recording and maintaining all public records in the county. Sandra K. Dalton is the current Clerk of Court for the Circuit Court for Frederick County, as of 2015; she has served the office since 1998. In addition to maintaining public records, the office of the clerk also issues business and marriage licenses and performs civil marriage ceremonies. The Court Clerk is responsible for birth and death records as well as marriage and divorce records. They also handle public records, which include deeds, warranties, mortgages, conveyances and plats.
