Baltimore County, Maryland

Baltimore County is located in the state of Maryland. The county was formed on June 30, 1659; the name of the county was derived from the barony of the Proprietor of the Calverts’ new colony in the Province of Maryland, Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore. Its county seat is Towson. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 805,029 people and a total area of 682 square miles, of which 83 square miles is water and 598 square miles is land, making it the third-most populous county in Maryland and third-largest county in Maryland by land area. Baltimore County borders the following: York County, Pennsylvania, to the north; Carroll County to the west; Harford County to the east; Anne Arundel County to the south; Howard County to the southwest; and Baltimore City to the south.

The Baltimore County Clerk’s office is charged with the responsibility of maintaining public records in the county. In addition to maintaining records, the clerk’s office performs civil marriage ceremonies, issues business and marriage licenses, and commissions notaries public. The Court Clerk is responsible for private records, which include military discharges, birth and death records and marriage licenses. These documents are only available to those that they are written about. This Clerk is also responsible for mortgages, conveyances, plats, land deeds and court actions, which are all considered public record. These documents are not available online, however they can be requested directly from the office of the clerk, during normal business hours.

The Assessment Office is responsible for calculating taxable valuations related to real and personal property within the county.

Baltimore County Marriage License Office
In order to obtain a marriage license in Baltimore County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
