Located on both the northern and southern border of Maryland, Allegany County is 430 square miles total, with only 5.8 of that being water. It is surrounded to the northwest by Somerset County, Pennsylvania, the north by Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the northeast by Fulton County, Pennsylvania, the east by Washington County, the southeast by Morgan County, West Virginia, the south by Hampshire County, West Virginia, the southwest by Mineral County, West Virginia and the west by Garrett County.
