Somerset County is located in the state of Maine. The county was formed on March 1, 1809, from portions of Kennebec County and named after Somerset County in England. Skowhegan is the largest city in the county and the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 52,228 people and a total area of 4,094 square miles, of which 169 square miles is water and 3,924 square miles is land, making it the third-largest county in Maine by area. Somerset County borders the following counties and municipalities: Aroostook County to the north; Penobscot County to the east; Piscataquis County to the east; Waldo County to the southeast; Kennebec County to the south; Franklin County to the southwest; Le Granit Regional County Municipality, Quebec, to the west; Beauce-Sartigan Regional County Municipality, Quebec, to the west; Les Etchemins Regional County Municipality, Quebec, to the northwest; and Montmagny Regional County Municipality, Quebec, to the northwest.
The Somerset County Registry of Deeds is responsible for maintaining all public records in the county.
