Penobscot County, Maine

Penobscot County is located in the state of Maine. The county was established on February 15, 1816, from a portion of Hancock County, when the area was still part of Massachusetts. The county was named after the Penobscot tribe. Bangor is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 153,923 people and a total area of 3,557 square miles, of which 160 square miles is water and 3,397 square miles is land. Penobscot County borders the following counties: Aroostook County to the north, Washington County to the southeast, Hancock County to the south, Waldo County to the southwest, Somerset County to the west, and Piscataquis County to the northwest.

The Penobscot County Registry of Deeds is charged with the responsibility of maintaining public records in the county. Some of the records maintained by the office include surveys, deeds, mortgages, assignments, plats, condominiums, powers of attorney, real estate contracts, annexations, federal tax liens, and military discharges.

Records maintained by the Registry of Deeds can be accessed by the public. To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the Registry of Deeds. The following scanned documents and indices are available online: the indices from 1814 to 1874 and from 1890 to 1966 have been scanned into the database in their original form. (Indices from 1875 to 1889 are not currently available.) You may do a search by the name of the record, and check the original index pages. After finding the book and page on the scanned index pages, use the book and page number to search for the document. Non-subscribers may pay by credit card, while subscribers may print document images by charging fees to their account. The subscription fee is $35 per month and 50 cents per page for print images.

They also include public records, such as property liens and land surveys, affidavits, deeds and mortgages. All documents are available directly from the office, during normal business hours, and many are available for purchase directly through the website for the Register of Deeds.

The Assessment Office is responsible for GIS maps, tax equalizations, property and land tax assessments, property listings and values, property searches and any other property related records. This office does have documents available for purchase online and most of these documents are considered public record, purchasable by anyone.

Once a court case has been completed and filed it is generally considered public record and can be requested by anyone. These records are available directly from the court and can be requested during normal business hours. They are not available online.

Penobscot County Marriage License Office
In order to obtain a marriage license in Penobscot County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
