Oxford County is located in the state of Maine. The county was formed on March 4, 1805, from northerly portions of York and Cumberland counties. Rumford is the largest city in the county, while Paris is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 57,833 people and a total area of 2,176 square miles, of which 99 square miles is water and 2,077 square miles is land. Oxford County borders the following counties and municipalities: Franklin County to the northeast; Androscoggin County to the east; Cumberland County to the southeast; York County to the south; Carroll County, New Hampshire, to the southwest; Coos County, New Hampshire, to the west; and Le Granit Regional County Municipality, Quebec, to the north.
The Oxford County Register of Deeds is responsible for maintaining all public records in the county. The register handles deeds, liens, powers of attorney, court papers, abstracts of divorce, mortgages, discharges, abstracts of probate, land installment contracts, and anything affecting the ownership of land, including subdivision plans and standard boundary surveys.
Records maintained by the office of the register can be accessed by the public, either by doing a background check online or by visiting the Register of Deeds’ office in person during office hours. To do a public records search online, you will have to visit Eastern District or Western District.
When obtaining records in person, you will be required to present a records request form to the Register of Deeds. Land records from Stoneham, Lovell, Denmark, Porter, Fryeburg, Stow, Sweden, Brownfield, and Hiram are kept at the Western District Office located at 38 Portland Street, Fryeburg, ME 04037. Records from Andover, Bethel, Buckfield, Byron, Canton, Dixfield, Gilead, Greenwood, Hanover, Hartford, Hebron, Lincoln Plantation, Magalloway Plantation, Mexico, Milton Plantation, Newry, Norway, Otisfield, Oxford, Paris, Peru, Roxbury, Rumford, Sumner, Upton, Waterford, West Paris and Woodstock are kept at the Eastern District at South Paris ME 04281.
