Kennebec County, Maine
Kennebec County is located in the state of Maine. The county was formed on February 20, 1799, from portions of Cumberland and Lincoln counties. The county name comes from the Eastern Abenaki, meaning “large body of still water” or “large bay”. Its county seat is Augusta, the state capital. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 122,151 people and a total area of 951 square miles, of which 868 square miles is land and 84 square miles is water. Kennebec County borders the following counties: Somerset County to the north, Waldo County to the east, Sagadahoc County to the south, Lincoln County to the south, Androscoggin County to the southwest, and Franklin County to the northwest.
The Kennebec County Registry of Deeds Office is charged with the main responsibility of maintaining public records in the county. The Register of Deeds is responsible for all property related documents including mortgages, liens, land surveys and affidavits. They are also responsible for birth and death records, marriage records, military discharges, divorce decrees and court records. Property related documents are considered public record and can be requested at any time, directly from the office or online.
