Cumberland County, Maine

Cumberland County is located in the state of Maine. The county was formed on November 1, 1760, from a portion of York County, Massachusetts, and named after William, Duke of Cumberland, a son of King George II. Portland is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 281,674, making it the most populous county in Maine. It has a total area of 1,217 square miles, of which 382 square miles is water and 835 square miles is land. Cumberland County borders the following counties: Androscoggin County to the north, Oxford County to the northwest, Sagadahoc County to the northeast and York County to the southwest.

Nancy A. Lane is the Cumberland County Register of Deeds as of 2015. The office of the Register of Deeds is the custodian of a large number of documents relating to property conveyance and ownership in the county.  The office is responsible for the maintenance, integrity, and safekeeping of all public records with which it is legally entrusted. The land records maintained by the office of the register date back as far as 1753, while plan records date back to 1828.
