Acadia Parish, Louisiana

Acadia Parish is located in the state of Louisiana. The parish was formed from parts of St. Landry Parish in 1886; the name of the parish is derived from the former French colony of Acadia in Canada. The parish seat is Crowley. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the parish has a population of approximately 61,773 people and a total area of 657 square miles, of which 2.3 square miles is water and 655 square miles is land. Acadia Parish borders the following parishes: Evangeline Parish to the north, St. Landry Parish to the northeast, Lafayette Parish to the east, Vermillion Parish to the south, and Jefferson Davis Parish to the west.

The Recording Department of the Acadia Parish Clerk of Court is responsible for the filing of conveyance, mortgage, and UCC documents deposited in Acadia Parish. When recording documents, they are given an entry number with the date, hour, and minute of filing. The document is then entered into the computer, scanned for an electronic image, and put into the day book. The documents are then pulled into a Mortgage & Conveyance Indexing program where the names of all parties and a full screen description of the document are indexed. The documents indexed are then checked for any errors and merged into the current year indices for use by the public. Unlike most states, original documents sent to the Clerk of the District Court to be recorded are not returned to the sender.

Documents recorded by the parish clerk can only be obtained in person or by mail. You will have to submit a written request with the details of the records you are requesting. If you want to obtain the records by mail, you will be required to include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
