St. Mary Parish, Louisiana

St. Mary Parish is located in the state of Louisiana. The parish was formed in 1811 and named after Saint Mary. Morgan City is the largest city in the parish, while Franklin is the parish seat. According to the 2010 census done by the U.S. Census Bureau, the parish has a population of approximately 54,650 people and a total area of 1,119 square miles, of which 555 square miles is land and 564 square miles is water. St. Mary Parish borders the following parishes: Iberia Parish to the north, St. Martin Parish to the east, Assumption Parish to the southeast, and Terrebonne Parish to the south.

The St, Mary Parish Clerk of Court is charged with the responsibility of filing, recording, and  maintaining all records in the parish as stated by the law. In addition, the office of the clerk is responsible for issuing marriage licenses.  Records maintained by the office of the clerk include but are not limited to liens (federal, state, and child support), real estate and land records (mortgages, trust deeds, assignments of mortgages, plats, subdivisions, surveys, contracts for deeds, release deeds, and monument records), and Uniform Commercial Code (financing statement, amendments, and terminations).

In order to obtain a marriage license in St. Mary County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
