Orleans Parish is located in the state of Louisiana. The parish was formed in 1718 and named after the Duke of Orleans. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the parish has a population of approximately 343,829 people and a total area of 350 square miles, of which 181 square miles is water and 169 square miles is land. However, it is now the third most populous parish, trailing neighboring Jefferson Parish and East Baton Rouge Parish.
The Orleans Parish Clerk of Civil District Court is charged with the responsibility of recording and maintaining all public records in the county. The office of the clerk has consolidated three offices formerly known as Recorder of Mortgages, Register of Conveyances, and Custodian of Notarial Archives. As a result, the office now has only one office (Land Records Division) responsible for filing, recording, and indexing all instruments and acts. All Orleans Parish land records such as sales, judgments of possession, building contracts, and mortgages are now filed and recorded in the Land Records Division of the Clerk’s Office.
Records maintained by the office of the clerk can be obtained by doing a background check online or by visiting the clerk’s office in person during office hours.
