Lafourche Parish, Louisiana

Lafourche Parish is located in the south of the state of Louisiana. The parish was formed in 1807 and named after the Bayou Lafourche. Originally, the parish was in the northern part of Lafourche Interior Parish, which consisted of the present Terrebonne Parish and Lafourche Parish. Thibodaux is the largest city in the parish and also the parish seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the parish has a population of approximately 96,318 people and a total area of 1,474 square miles, of which 406 square miles is water and 1,068 square miles is land. Lafourche Parish borders the following:  St. James Parish to the north, St. John the Baptist Parish to the north, St. Charles Parish to the northeast, Jefferson Parish to the east, Terrebonne Parish to the west, and Assumption Parish to the northwest.
