East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana

East Baton Rouge Parish is located in the state of Louisiana. The county was formed in 1812 and named for the French words “bâton rouge”, meaning red stick. The parish seat is Baton Rouge, Louisiana’s state capital. Other cities in the parish include Baker, Zachary, and Central City. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the parish has a population of approximately 440,171 people, making it the most populous parish in the state. It has a total area of 470 square miles, of which 15 square miles is water and 455 square miles is land. East Baton Rouge Parish borders the following parishes: East Feliciana Parish to the north, West Feliciana Parish to the northwest, West Baton Rouge Parish to the west, Iberville Parish to the south, Ascension Parish to the southeast, Livingston Parish to the east, and St. Helena Parish to the northeast.

The Recording Department of the East Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court is charged with the responsibility of recording all notarial acts in the county. This is the point at which the document becomes a public record. When documents are being recorded in the department, they are given an identification number, referred to as an original, and bundle number, as well as a dated and timed recordation stamp. In addition to notarial acts, the department also records UCC financing statements; they are given numbers that are separate from the Original and Bundle.
