DeSoto Parish, Louisiana Overview

DeSoto Parish is located in the northwestern portion of Louisiana in the Sportsman’s Paradise region. It is a landlocked Parish with 895 square miles of claimed area of which 19 square miles are water. DeSoto Parish is named after one of the original settlers to the area, Marcel DeSoto. It is bordered by Caddo parish to the north, Red River Parish to the east, Natchitoches Parish to the southeast, Sabine Parish to the south, Shelby Parish Texas to the southwest, and Panola Parish, Texas to the west.

The Parish Clerk is responsible for personal protection orders, concealed weapons permits, family court information, circuit court information, voter registration, election results, notary public documents, birth and death certificates, marriage licenses and military discharges. These documents are available to those that they are about but are not considered public record (with the exception of election results). Documents can be researched online or requested directly from the office, during normal business hours. Fees are applied to these documents as well.
The Register of Deeds is responsible for warranties, deeds, liens, leases and mortgages as well as other documents related to personal and real property. These documents are considered public record and can be requested during normal business hours or researched via the online system. All of these documents have fees attached for research and requests as well as copies.

The Equalization Department monitors and maintains the taxable valuation of all real and personal property within the parish.

The Equalization Department handles tax and assessment rolls, GIS maps, aerial images, surveys and information related to property lines, owners and descriptions. All of these documents are considered public record and can be requested at any time, for a fee. Some of these property related documents are available online; however others are only available upon request directly with the office.
