Monroe County is located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The county was formed in 1820 and named after James Monroe, a former President of the United States (1817–25). The county seat is Tompkinsville. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 10,681 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 332 square miles of which 329 square miles is land and 2.7 square miles is water. Monroe County borders the following counties: Barren County to the northwest; Metcalfe County to the northeast; Cumberland County to the east; Clay County, Tennessee to the southeast; Macon County, Tennessee to the southwest and Allen County to the west.
