Martin County is located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The county was formed in 1870 and named after John P. Martin, a former United States Congressman from Kentucky (1845–47). The county seat is Inez. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 12,647people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 231 square miles of which 230 square miles is land and 1.0 square mile is water. Martin County borders the following counties: Lawrence County to the northwest; Wayne County, West Virginia to the northeast; Mingo County, West Virginia to the southeast; Pike County to the south; Floyd County to the southwest and Johnson County to the west.
