Madison County, Kentucky Overview

Madison County is located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The county was formed in 1785 and named after James Madison, President of the United States (1809–17). The county seat is Richmond. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2010, the county has a population of approximately 85,590 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 443 square miles of which 437 square miles is land and 6.0 square miles is water. Madison County borders the following counties: Fayette County to the north; Clark County to the northeast; Powell County to the northeast (1/4 mile wide strip of land); Estill County to the east; Jackson County to the southeast; Rockcastle County to the south; Garrard County to the southwest and Jessamine County to the northwest. The main responsibilities of the County Clerk’s Office are vehicle registration, repossession, issuing handicap placards, issuing marriage licenses, fishing, and hunting licenses.
