Hancock County is located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The county was formed in 1829 and named after John Hancock, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The county seat is Hawesville. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 8,687 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 199 square miles of which 188 square miles is land and 11 square miles is water. Hancock County borders the following counties: Spencer County, Indiana to the northwest; Perry County, Indiana to the northeast; Breckinridge County to the southeast; Ohio County to the south and Daviess County to the west. The main responsibilities of the Hancock County Clerk’s Office are vehicle registration, repossession, issuing handicap placards, issuing marriage licenses, fishing, and hunting licenses, and collecting delinquent taxes. The County Clerk also records and maintains various land and legal documents. These records include deeds, condominiums, corporate records, fixture and other UCC filings, land records fees, land use restrictions, liens, mortgages, plats, releases, veteran’s discharges, and wills.
