Cumberland County is located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The county was formed in 1798 and named after The Cumberland River, which flows through the county. The county seat is Burkesville. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 6,789 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 311 square miles of which 305 square miles is land and 5.7 square miles is water. Cumberland County borders the following counties: Cumberland County to the north; Russell County to the northeast; Clinton County to the east; Clay County, Tennessee to the south; Monroe County to the west and Metcalfe County to the northwest.
