Carter County is located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The county was formed in 1838 and named after William Grayson Carter, who was a Kentucky state senator. The county seat is Grayson. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 27,202 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 412 square miles of which 409 square miles is land and 2.6 square miles is water. Carter County borders the following counties: Greenup County to the northeast; Boyd County to the east; Lawrence County to the southeast; Elliott County to the south; Rowan County to the southwest and Lewis County to the northwest. Carter County Clerk’s Office Information
The responsibilities of the Clerk’s Office are issuing licenses such marriage licenses, fishing, and hunting licenses, maintaining legal records and county records, preparation of county tax bills, and collection of delinquent real estate taxes. The Clerk’s Office is also responsible for voter registration, conducting all elections in the county, and other election-related duties including maintaining written certifications of oaths of office. The clerks also serve as clerks of the fiscal court. The Clerk’s Office is also responsible for recording and maintaining various land records such as deeds, mortgages, liens, assumed names, articles of incorporation, wills, etc. Records maintained by the Clerk’s Office are public records and available to the general public for inspection.
