Bell County, Kentucky Overview

Bell County is located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The county was formed in 1867 and named after Joshua Fry Bell, Kentucky legislator (1862–67). The county seat is Pineville. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 27,885 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 361 square miles of which 359 square miles is land and 2.1 square miles is water. Bell County borders the following counties: Clay County to the north; Leslie County to the northeast; Harlan County to the east; Lee County, Virginia to the southeast; Claiborne County, Tennessee to the south; Whitley County to the southwest and Knox County to the northwest. The Bell County Clerk’s Office offers many services including vehicle tag renewals, title transfers, vehicle registrations, and motor vehicle transactions. The Clerk is also responsible for recording and maintaining all public records pertaining to the county. Documents that are recorded and preserved are deeds, mortgages, liens, and marriage licenses. Other responsibilities of the Clerk’s Office include voter registration, administering all elections, recording all land records, issuing fishing and hunting licenses, notary bonds and processing delinquent real estate taxes.
