Jefferson County is a county located in the state of Kansas. The county was formed in August 25, 1855. Named after President Thomas Jefferson, the county seat is Oskaloosa and it has a population of 18813 as of 2013. The county has a total area of 557 square miles, with its land area encompassing 533 square miles, and its water area 24 square miles. The county consists of 15 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 66512 recorded as the one with the largest population. Jefferson County Clerk Information

The County Clerk’s Office handles many administrative duties for Jefferson County. These duties include:

  • Acts as the Secretary to the Board of County Commissioners by scheduling meetings, preparing and distributing the agenda and recording and distributing official meeting minutes.
  • Responsible for keeping official record of the Board of County Commissioners
  • Serves as the County Election Officer
  • Review budgets for all County taxing entities
  • Prepare budgets for cemeteries, townships, fire districts, drainage and watershed districts

Register of Deeds

The Register of Deeds Office is responsible for recording, archiving, and retrieving the land records for Jefferson County. The office records various types of documents affecting Jefferson County real estate under the guidance of the Kansas statutes.

The Appraiser’s Office is responsible for locating, identifying, and appraising all property within Jefferson County.
