The county was formed in March 11, 1868 and named after Granville Llewellyn Gove, member of the 11th Regiment Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, and son of Moses Gove, a former mayor of Manhattan, Kansas. The county seat is Gove City. As of 2013, the county has a population of 2769. The county has a total area of 1072 square miles, 1072 square miles of which is land, and 0.1 square miles is water.
