The county was formed in February 26, 1867 and named after Fort Ellsworth, named in honor of 2nd Lieutenant Allen Ellsworth of the 7th Iowa Cavalry (Company H), who supervised construction of the fort in 1864 during the American Civil War. The county seat is Ellsworth. As of 2013, the county has a population of 6398. The county has a total area of 723 square miles, 716 square miles of which is land, and 7.4 square miles is water.
