Ellsworth County is located in the state of Kansas. The county was formed in February 26, 1867 and named after Fort Ellsworth, named in honor of 2nd Lieutenant Allen Ellsworth of the 7th Iowa Cavalry (Company H), who supervised construction of the fort in 1864 during the American Civil War. The county seat is Ellsworth. As of 2013, the county has a population of 6398. The county has a total area of 723 square miles, 716 square miles of which is land, and 7.4 square miles is water. The county consists of 9 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 67439 recorded as the one with the largest population. Ellsworth County borders the following counties: Lincoln County, Kansas to the north; Rice County, Kansas to the south; Saline County, Kansas to the east; Russell County, Kansas to the northwest; Barton County, Kansas to the southwest, and; McPherson County, Kansas to the southeast.

The County Clerk is responsible for a wide range of duties as specified by State Statutes.
