Cherokee County is a county located in the state of Kansas. The county was formed in February 18, 1860. Named after Cherokee Native Americans, the county seat is Columbus and it has a population of 20978 as of 2013. The county has a total area of 591 square miles, with its land area encompassing 588 square miles, and its water area 3.5 square miles. The county consists of 14 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 66713 recorded as the one with the largest population. Moreover, Cherokee County borders the following counties: Crawford County, Kansas to the north; Ottawa County, Oklahoma to the south; Jasper County, Missouri to the east; Labette County, Kansas to the west; Craig County, Oklahoma to the southwest, and; Newton County, Missouri to the southeast.

Cherokee County Clerk Information

The Clerk’s Office is responsible for elections, voter registrations, recording, maintaining agendas and all records of the County Commission. We maintain all county records and account payables. The County Clerk is also the “Freedom of Information Officer. ” Provides educational materials and information concerning the “Open Records Act,” assists any public agency and members of the general public to resolve disputes relating to the “Open Records Act,” and responds to inquiries relating to the “Open Records Act.”

Register of Deeds
The Register of Deeds is responsible for recording all transactions relating to real estate in Cherokee County. This includes deeds, mortgages, oil and gas leases and platted additions to all cities in Cherokee County. The Register of Deeds also files financing statements and security agreements on personal property under the Uniform Commercial Code, Federal and State tax liens, Corporation documents, Power of Attorney and Military Discharges.

Appraiser
The appraiser provides a parcel search feature. The public link allows users to view information used by their office to assist in the valuation of real estate. Court Clerk Information
All court record search requests must be in writing. Copies of documents are 25 cents per page. The hourly search fee is $12.00. The office has a public access computer with cases beginning in 1990.
