Chautauqua County is located in the state of Kansas. The county was formed in March 25, 1875 and named after Chautauqua County, New York, the birthplace of Edward Jaquins, a Kansas politician who was instrumental in getting the county established. The county seat is Sedan. As of 2013, the county has a population of 3552. The county has a total area of 645 square miles, 639 square miles of which is land, and 5.9 square miles is water. The county consists of 10 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 67361 recorded as the one with the largest population. Chautauqua County borders the following counties: Elk County, Kansas to the north; Osage County, Oklahoma to the south; Montgomery County, Kansas to the east; Cowley County, Kansas to the west, and; Washington County, Oklahoma to the southeast.
