Named after Thomas Barber, an abolitionist who was killed in Douglas County in 1855 during the Wakarusa War, the county seat is Medicine Lodge and it has a population of 4947 as of 2013. The county has a total area of 1136 square miles, with its land area encompassing 1134 square miles, and its water area 2.1 square miles.
