Woodbury County, Iowa
Woodbury County is located in the state of Iowa. The county was formed in 1851 as Wahkaw County; however, in 1853 the Iowa legislature changed the name to Woodbury County in honor of Adam Woodbury, a senator and Governor of New Hampshire who served as a Supreme Court Justice from 1844 until his death. Sioux City is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 102,172 people and a total area of 878 square miles, of which 4.9 square miles is water and 873 square miles is land, making it the third-largest county by area in Iowa. Woodbury County borders the following counties: Plymouth County to the north; Cherokee County to the northeast; Ida County to the east; Monona County to the south; Thurston County, Nebraska, to the southwest; Dakota County, Nebraska, to the west; and Union County, South Dakota, to the northwest.
Woodbury County’s Recorder’s Office is one of two combined Auditor and Recorder Offices in the State of Iowa. The recording division is responsible for maintaining all important documents in the county from land records to vital records. In addition, the recorder’s office issues marriage licenses. Certified and uncertified copies of county vital records are obtained from the recorder’s office in person by visiting the recorder’s office during office hours or by mail.
