Scott County, Iowa

Scott County is located in the state of Iowa. The county was formed in 1837 and named after General Winfield Scott, who was the presiding officer at the signing of the peace treaty ending the Black Hawk War. Davenport is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 165,224 people, making it the third-most populous county in Iowa. It covers a total area of 468 square miles, of which 10 square miles is water and 458 square miles is land. Scott County borders the following counties: Clinton County to the north; Rock Island County, Illinois, to the east & south; Muscatine County to the southwest; and Cedar County to the northwest.

The Recorder’s Office was created in 1839 by the First Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Iowa. The main responsibility of the office is to record and maintain official records affecting title to real estate. In addition to recording documents, the recorder’s office registers births and deaths, issues marriage licenses and certificates on vital records, and processes passport applications.

To obtain records maintained by the recorder’s office, you can do a background check online, or visit the recorder’s office in person if you want certified copies of public records. Certified copies of vital records are not considered public records and can only be obtained from the recorder’s office; you will have to prove your entitlement. Certified copies are $20.00 each. Payment can be made through check or money order payable to “Scott County Recorder”.
