Sac County, Iowa Overview

Established in 1851, Sac County, Iowa, in February 2007, in its third annual list of the “Best Places to Live in Rural America”, Progressive Farmer magazine placed Sac County as #7 in the overall rankings. In 2009, the magazine ranked Sac County as the tenth “Best Place” in the Midwest Region. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,350. Sac City is the county seat and the largest community. Both the county and the city were named in honor of the Native American Suak tribes. The county’s total area is 578 square miles, 575 of which is land and the remaining three are water. The county is surrounded by five other Iowan counties: Buena Vista lies to the north, Calhoun to the east, Carroll to the southeast, Crawford to the southwest, and Ida to the west.
