O’Brien County, Iowa Overview
Established in 1851, with 573 square miles of total area, all of which is land, O’Brien county, IA has its county seat in Primghar. Primghar; however, is not the largest community, Sheldon claims that title. The county was named for a leader of Irish independence, William Smith O’Brien. The current courthouse, constructed in 1917 is on the National Register of Historic Places. As of the 2010 census, the population in the county was 14,398. Four Iowan counties neighbor O’ Brien, Osceola to the north, Clay to the east, Cherokee to the south and Sioux to the west.
