Muscatine County, Iowa Overview

Muscatine County, Iowa, established in 1836, had a population of 42,745 as of the 2010 census. The largest community and county seat is Muscatine. One history of the county claims it was named for Muscatine Island in the Mississippi River, which lies at the southeastern border, between Muscatine County, IA and Rock Island County, Illinois. The island is opposite Muscatine County and was believed to be named after the Mascouten tribe, Algonquian-speaking Native Americans who lived in the area before being driven west by settler encroachment and other tribes. Four Iowan counties also border Muscatine, and they are: Cedar to the north, Scott to the northeast, Louisa to the south and Johnson to the northwest. The county’s total area is 437 square miles of land, plus 12 square miles of water. Thirteen zip codes are used in the county, the largest is 52761.
