Monroe County, Iowa Overview

Monroe County, Iowa, established in 1843 was named for our fifth POTUS, James Monroe and is in the south-central part of the state. The population, as of the 2010 census was 7,970. The county seat and largest community is Albia. With total square miles of 434, all of which is land, the county borders against five other Iowan counties: Marion to the northwest, Mahaska to the northeast, Wapello to the east, Appanoose to the south, and Lucas to the west. The largest zip code in the county is 52531 and it is but one of a total of seven zips deployed in the county.
