Monona County, Iowa Overview

Monona County, Iowa was established in 1851 and although we aren’t sure of the origin of its name, it is believed that the name is Indian for beautiful valley. The county seat is Onawa, which is also the largest community. As of the 2010 census the population was 9,243. The county has a total area of 699 square miles, five of which is water and 694 square miles is land. Two Nebraska counties neighbor Monona to the west, Thurston and Burt to the southwest. Woodbury county, IA lies to the north, Crawford county, IA to the east and Harrison county, IA to the south. Fourteen zip codes are utilized by the county, the largest of which is 51040.
