Mitchell County, Iowa Overview

Named in honor of an Irish patriot, John Mitchel, Mitchell County is in Iowa. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,776. The county seat, and largest community is Osage. The county’s courthouse was completed in 1858, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The courthouse has since been razed. The total area of the county is 470 square miles, all of which is land. Mower County, Minnesota lies to the north of Mitchell County. Four additional Iowa counties are also neighbors: Howard to the east, Floyd to the south, Cerro Gordo to the southwest, and Worth to the west.
