Marion County, Iowa Overview

Marion County, which should not be confused with the city of Marion, is in the state of Iowa. The population, as of the 2010 census was 33,309. Established in 1845, the county was named for a brigadier general who was from South Carolina and served in the American Revolution, Francis Marion. The county seat is Knoxville; however, Pella is the largest community. The total area of the county is 571 square miles and 555 of that is land, and the remaining 16 square miles is water. The county borders to five other Iowa counties: Jasper to the north, Mahaska to the east, Monroe to the southeast, Lucas to the southwest, and Warren to the west. A total of 16 zip codes are in use in the county, the largest of which is 50219.
