Mahaska County, Iowa Overview

Established in 1843, Mahaska County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,335. The county seat is Oskaloosa, and it is also the largest community. It was named after Chief Mahaska of the Iowa tribe. The county was the first in Iowa to have a sheriff and a justice of peace. Coal mining was once a major industry in Mahaska County. In the 19th century, Muchakinock, about 5 miles south of Oskaloosa, was probably the largest and most prosperous coal camp in Iowa. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 573 square miles, of which 571 square miles is land and 2.5 square miles is water. The county is surrounding by six other Iowa counties: Jasper to the northwest, Poweshiek to the north, Keokuk to the east, Wapello to the southeast, Monroe to the southwest, and Marion to the west. The largest zip code in use in the county is 52577; however, it is only one of the 16 total zip codes in use.
