Louisa County, Iowa Overview
Louisa County, established in 1836 has its county seat in the largest community of Wapello. The population, as of the 2010 census, was 11,387. Two theories have been offered for the origins of its name: one is that it was named after Louisa Massey, who was very well known in the area at the time because she avenged the murder of her brother when she shot the party responsible. The other is that it was named after Louisa County, Virginia. The eastern border of the county is adjacent to the Mississippi River, as well as Mercer County, Illinois and Rock Island County, Illinois. Additional neighboring counties are all in Iowa; Johnson to the northwest, Muscatine to the north, Des Moines to the south, Henry to the southwest, and Washington to the west. Louisa county is also home to the nationally protected Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge. The county uses a total of 12 zip codes, the largest of which is 52653.
