Lee County, Iowa Overview

Lee County, Iowa, was established in 1836. As of the 2010 census, the population was 35,862. It has two county seats, Fort Madison and Keokuk, and Fort Madison is the largest community. The source of Lee’s name is uncertain; however, it could have been named for Marsh, Delevan and Lee, a land company in Albany, New York, Robert E Lee, who surveyed the Des Moines Rapids, or Albert Lea who explored the interior of the state. The county’s total area is 539 square miles, 518 is land and the remining 21 square miles is water. The lowest part of the state is on the Mississippi River in Keokuk within the county lines. From there, the river leaves Iowa and flows to Illinois and Missouri. Lee County is surrounded by Henry County to the north, Des Moines County to the northeast, Henderson County, Illinois, across the river east, Hancock County, Illinois to the southeast, Clark County, Missouri in the southwest and Van Buren County, Iowa in the west. While 52627 is the largest zip code in the county, 11 others are also used.
