Kossuth County, Iowa Overview

Kossuth County, Iowa established in 1851, had a population of 15,543 as of the 2010 census. The county seat and largest community is Algona. Kossuth County was named after Lajos Kossuth, Regent-President of Hungary who went to exile to America following the war of independence of Hungary from Austria. The county was enlarged northward in 1857 by the inclusion of the former Bancroft County. The county, which is home to nationally protected Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge, is a total of 974 square miles in size almost all of which is land. Kossuth County shares a northern border with two Minnesota counties, Martin and Faribault. There are also five neighboring Iowa counties: Winnebago to the northeast, Hancock to the southeast, Humboldt to the south, Palo Alto to the southwest, and Emmet to the northwest. The county uses a total of 21 zip codes, and the largest is 50511.
