Jefferson county, in Iowa was established in 1839 and named for President Thomas Jefferson. The county name should not be confused with the city of Jefferson. Both the county seat and largest community if Fairfield and the total area of the county is 437 square miles, all of which is land, except for one square mile of water. Neighboring counties are all in the same state and include: Keokuk county to the northwest, Washington County to the northwest, Henry to the east, Van Buren to the south, Wapello to the west.
