Howard county, IA had a population of 9,566 as of the 2010 census. Established in 1851, the county seat and largest community is Cresco, and it was named for an Indiana Representative, General Tilghman Ashurst Howard. The county’s total area is 474 square miles, 473 of which is land and the remaining one square mile is water. Howard county is bordered to the north by Minnesota and two of its counties, Mower to the northwest and Fillmore to the north. Four other Iowa counties are also neighbors: Winneshiek to the east, Chickasaw to the south, Mitchell to the west and Floyd to the southwest.
