Hardin County, Iowa Overview
Established in 1851 and named for Colonel John J Hardin, who was killed in the Mexican-American War, Hardin County, Iowa had a population of 17,534 as of the 2010 census. The county seat is Eldora; however, Iowa Falls is the largest community. The current courthouse is the third one, built in 1893, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hardin county, along with neighboring Story county were both filming locations for the movie, Twister, with Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. The total area of the county is 570 square miles, almost all of which is land. Other than Story county, which borders to the southwest, Hancock is also neighbored by Franklin to the north, Butler to the northeast, Grundy to the east, Marshall to the southeast, and Hamilton to the west.
